I'm alive...but my old laptop isn't

Yes, it's been awhile. Things have been busy and in the middle of it, my laptop decided that it no longer wanted to take a charge from the power cable. Good news...the fellows I work with bought me a brand new MacBook. I love this little sucker.

I have lots to share...but no pictures. I lost the sync cord for my phone and need to buy some batteries for my camera.

Let's see...what's happened over the last few weeks...

- I turned down a pretty great job offer.
- I've been working on final touches on our summer cottage which is hitting the market this week. (anyone looking for a nice house on a lake in northern Illinois?)
- Moved my hang out room from the second floor "creepy room" to the basement. It's nice and cool down there for the summer.
- and a TON of other stuff too...

My mom and I went on a field trip this past Saturday to The Fold in Marengo, Illinois. It's about 90 minutes west of the city...in the country. Mom was totally overwhelmed with the selection of yarn (biggest collection of sock yarn ever!), roving, etc. She picked up some fantastic sock yarn and some dyeing supplies for my sister. I bought some sock yarn for my Hogwarts Sock Kit Swap partner...a beautiful skein of Blue Moon Fiber Arts Boucle for a shawl, and a cool roving kit "Blue Moon Western Luxury Collection." It's going to be fun!!

We had a nice lunch in downtown Woodstock and then stopped at an antique mall before heading back. It was a great day.

Know what made the day even better?! When I got home there was a package for me from SP10!! This crazy woman sent me some super kick-ass stuff!! A book called "The Knitters Bible Knited Accessories" (which I've never seen and LOVE), a hilarious bumble bee tape measure (pull the stinger to measure!), size 6 bamboo dpns, and yarn...lots of yarn! A gorgeous skein of Socks that Rock in Rare Gem colorway --- all my favorite deep jewel tones! A skein of pretty purpley/pinkish yarn from Mama Llama called Vino. 4 skeins of Wool of the Ande --- 2 in Chocolate and 2 in Asparagus...maybe not two items you would eat together - but the color combination is great! She also sent me some beautifully dyed roving --- I'm not sure what kind of fiber...maybe some kind of wool, the hair is really long. (oh ya, and a third skein of Lorna's Laces for the knee sock pattern she sent me earlier!)

I'm such a lucky girl...I have so much stuff to keep me busy!!! Thank you, Thank you, dear SP10!!!

I'm off to meet my sister and brook for a little knit night...I hope to post pictures of my goodies soon!!

Oh Yaaa, Fargo

My trip to Fargo on Tuesday was a flop. The day started off with our flight being cancelled. The airline said it was mechanical issues...I'm sure it's because the flight wasn't full. So, we waiting a few hours at O'Hare to board the next tiny plane to North Dakota.

I travelled with two fellas I work with. Good news...nobody ended up in a woodchipper!

After our meeting, we our flight was delayed a couple hours. So, let me tell you, I know the Fargo airport pretty well --- all 4 gates of it!

Here's a view from the airport. The view was pretty much the same from all directions --- flat, green, and not many trees.

I did start on a sock on the way home. It's coming along nicely and will be my daily travel project on the train to work.

Got my invitation to the beta version of Ravelry. I got to say...it's pretty cool.

It's an amazing tool to keep track of your stash, tools, current projects and past projects. The search tools are cool...want to know what your sock would look like in another yarn? Do a search and see a couple hundred finished Jaywalkers!

I'm tired...so this probably doesn't make much sense.

I have to get up early tomorrow for a field trip to Fargo, North Dakota. No sleep over...just flying in for a meeting and then heading home.

I always have an extra leash in my car for when I see dogs running around by themselves. You might be surprised (or not) that I see a lot of pooches running around Chicago and my town --- it freaks me out. I'm always afraid I will see one get hit by a car... I don't even want to think about it.
I have a low tolerance for bad manners.
My hair hasn't been past my shoulders since 4th grade. I like to have my hair in the shortest bob possible...it feels weird when I can feel hair on the back of my neck. I actually shaved my head before I graduated from college --- boy was my mom pissed. I always wanted to do it and figured it was the last chance before I got a "real job."
My family moved around quite a bit when I was growing up. Between kindergarten and 12th grade I attended seven schools. I made my Sacrament of Reconciliation twice (raised Catholic) but never studied the 50 state capitals.
I'm very uncoordinated. It's not unusual for me to suddenly fall down while walking down the street. The most embarrassing time was crossing Michigan Avenue in the heart of a major shopping district in Chicago during lunchtime. It was crowded and I just fell in the middle of the street. Of course, I wasn't hurt...I just picked up my bag and kept walking like nothing happened.
I debuted my line of edgy handmade greeting cards at the 2003 National Stationary Show in NYC. It was almost sold to a major greeting card company...They just didn't have the vision.
In 5th grade, I participated in an exchange student program and lived with a family in a suburb of Paris. I still can't believe my parents let me go! I studied french during Junior High but switched to Spanish in high school. On my recent trip to Mexico, I kept mixing up French, Spanish, and even a couple Polish words.

What I'm Knitting...when I actually knit

My lady-friends were over last night for Knit Night. I felt like I had the energy drained out of me --- could have been from my shitty day at work or the warm temperatures last night. Either way, I wasn't filled with the usual amount of energy --- even after Kathy brought me the World's Largest Big Gulp of Coke from 7-11!

I have two projects going on right now. One is a super-cute baby vest for Erin's babe, Jack. I didn't want Erin to see it until it was completed...but I couldn't help myself last night and showed her the progress. I was really hoping to be able to give her a finished project last night...but it's hard to finish a project when you keep leaving the pattern in different places!

I'm also working on this purple Leaf Lace Shawl - pattern by Fiber Trends. The yarn is stuff that I've been spinning --- an alpaca blend. The color is much prettier that this picture...not so grey and drab looking.

This is my first shawl project, and it's a lot easier than I thought it would be. I can see how these can be addicting.

(hmmm, do you think I need a new digital camera? these pictures are awful!)

Flashing My Sock Stash

I've mentioned before that I don't have a large stash...but then I saw the container I use to house my sock yarn --- there's enough to make 13 pairs of socks! That seems like a lot to me.
I promised Shannon pictures...

My goal is to not purchase any more sock yarn until I have room in this container. The pop can is there for scale. It's not a large container...more of an oversized shoe box.

LOST!!!

Breaking news tonight, folks! LOST (my favorite tv show) will be ending...in three years.

Okay, so it's not breaking news...but seriously, how much longer could this show go on? At least it's not getting ripped off the air the way Twin Peaks was...and we all remember how that ended? That's right, David Lynch killed EVERYONE. No chance for that show to come back...unless it was a reunion in hell.

Good news! Shannon, aka Midnight 2 Sticks, and I figured out our audio issues on the SSK Podcast. If you were totally annoyed by our poor audio quality...give us another listen. You can even find us in iTunes!

Don't you hate it when...

Don't you hate it when you are working on a project and you leave the pattern at your mom's house for a couple weeks. Then you make a special trip over there to pick it up (along with your golf clubs)...drive home in rush hour traffic to find you left the book on Mom's table?!

I hate when that happens!!

I'm totally motivated to finish a particular project this week (it's a secret until I give it to a certain someone). I'm having a hard time starting a new knit project until I finish this particular one.

So, what have I been doing instead? Spinning!!

Here's a few hundred yards of sparkley purple alpaca I spun up over the weekend. The picture really don't show how pretty it is. My plan is to knit my very first shawl with it. Now to just decide what pattern...

I'm super excited about this rad new watch I got...It's a pink camouflage Tokidoki watch. Sure, it's big and bulky...but I totally love it! I can't wait to show it off at work tomorrow :)

I received a wonderful package from my Secret Pal...Check it out!!

A wonderful knee sock pattern with beautiful Lorna's Laces yarn in Argyle colorway. I'm a big fan of argyle socks and can't wait to see how the colors reveal themselves.

I also scored some beautiful roving. It's superwash wool from Ashabee's Creations. I think I'm going to attempt to spin my first sock yarn with it! So super exciting.

Thanks again, Secret Pal for the amazing package...I was great to come home to such a special fiber treat!

Bags to Be Felted

Well, I finished knitting two bags and I can't wait to felt them!

This first one is the same bag my Knit Night pals are working on. I HATE making i-cords, so I just did a twisted yarn handle...I'm thinking they're too short. But that's just the way they'll be, because I think I'm out of yarn. I used Cascade and Noro on size 15 needles for this project

The second bag was made on size 11 needles with Mauch Chucky yarn in the limeade colorway with a beautiful varigated Manos del Uruguay. The bottom of the bag was fun --- working short rows to make the circular bottom.I'm probably going to wait to felt at Brooke's house...she has a top-loading washing machine, which I think is better for the felting process.

ALERT THE PAPERS...
Brooke finished a project before Marie or me! She's already felted her bag...and I'm jealous.

The weather was so beautiful this weekend. On Saturday, I worked in the yard and completely ripped apart and cleaned up a couple of garden beds.

I have also decided that I don't like toe-up socks. I think I didn't start the gusset soon enough and have to do some frogging --- yuck.

Knitted Bags and Ragtime Piano

I have actually been knitting the last few days...and even have a finished project. I finished the handles for the knitted bag I started and completed on vacation. It was a quick knit...and fun because of the color changes in the Noro.

I started a second felted back...it's a bucket bag with a circular base. I stepped out of my color comfort zone and choose a sea foam green and a varigated yarn with reds and blues. It's turning out really pretty --- and it's fun to knit.

I'd share pictures, but I forgot my knitting at home. I've spend the last few days at my parent's house spending time with Grandma A --- my favorite grandma!

Right now, she's napping and I'm sitting in her room listening to Mom play piano downstairs. It's nice to hear...reminds me of when I was little.

It's a beautiful spring day...blue sky and green grass. I'm so glad spring is finally here!

I passed out last night before I could watch the results for this week's American Idol --- thank goodness for that DVR feature on my cable box!

Sanjaya has finally been voted off the show.

I kind of thought it was funny that he was getting the votes to move forward --- be it from his fans or Howard Stern's fans. But don't you get the feeling Sanjaya thinks he's a fantastic singer?

I think the other contestants were relived that Sanjaya is gone...he's been like a wild card on the show.

Who's going to win? I think Jordan Sparks...but my favorite is Blake.

Note: Thanks to that damn DVR, I've become addicted to this show for the first time!

Mayan Village Exhibit

At Xcaret they had an elaborate set-up of a typical Mayan village. Guess what I saw in one of the huts? FIBER STUFF!!!

Yes, there was roving, hand carders, a couple spinning wheels, and hand-spun yarn on display.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the Mayan's used wheels...maybe hand spindles?

Quick Vacation

No, I didn't drop off the face of the earth...my husband and I took a quick trip to warm and sunny Mexico. A nice long weekend in Playa del Carmen.

We had a great time and the weather couldn't have been better --- we left with snow on the ground at O'Hare and were welcomed by the warm breeze of the Carribean.

The resort we stayed at was connected to a really cool park called Xcaret. It was great to be able to spend a couple hours and then walk back for lunch for a quick nap. Some highlights included snorkeling an underground river, Snuba tour (cross between snorkeling and SCUBA) and Sea Trek tour.

Here's a picture of the Sea Trek thing...it was really cool and hilarious. We wore a big helmet that had oxygen pumped into it...so you could walk around and breathe underwater. I have some really funny pictures...but I don't have a scanner. I'll try to do it when I visit my mom's house later this week.

Knitting...finally

I am determined to complete this pair of Jaywalkers. The yarn is B. Marie from Scout's Indie Swag Club.

This is the first pair of toe-up socks for me. I originally started this pair a couple months back...let it sit for a while...forgot what I was doing...and had to rip it out.

I love the way the colors are patterning --- this is sure to be a favorite pair of socks for ME!

Oh --- I also made the rockin' strawberry necklace on the left. I'm totally in love with it...

Boys & Babies

Last weekend my mom, sister, and I hosted a baby shower for my buddy Georgann. Here's a picture of my brother-in-law holding a baby for the very first time!

He was so nervous --- we are all still giggling about it. Good job, Tim! (If you're wondering why a boy was at the party, it was a co-ed shower.)

The party was a success --- lots of piano playin', singing, and laughing.

Lots to share

Well, I had Marie & Brooke over for knit night on Monday. We didn't really knit though --- grabbed Thai food and visited Marie's friend who works for the Fire Department. He gave us a tour of "The House"...it wasn't anything like Rescue Me on FX.

I actually finished my teal/great socks...Hip, Hip, Hooray! They fit great and I'm happy it's cold and rainy out today so I can wear them. The yarn is Austermann Step Sock Yarn --- it was very nice to work with. There is Aloe and Jojoba integrated into the yarn...so it's nice and soft. I totally recommend it!

After I make a trip to JoAnn Fabrics, I will have my Irish Cable Bag finished. While cleaning out my studio, I found a really fun fabric remenent that will be super cool as a liner.

A few months back, Shannon and I thought it would be fun to record a podcast show. The unique spin on our show is that we're new friends...in fact we met through blogging. Smokin' Watermelon --- Haven't you ever seen one?

I brought Smoking Watermelon out this weekend to the rehearsal dinner and wedding. I think he had a really great time --- especially since everyone wanted to meet a smoking watermelon.

I love Mongers --- they're blind-boxed, so it's a suprise to see which character you get. I have to keep buying them until I get the cigarette smoking a cigarette --- so funny!

Here's a picture of all my little buddies at the office. From left to right: 2 ice cream cones, pepper, glow-in-the-dark banana, hot dog, and watermelon.

The only guy missing is Smoking Salt...he fell out of my pocket one day...Smoking Pepper really misses him.

Note: they are NOT promoting smoking. The tagline on the package says, "Smoking is Bad." It's bad...but so funny when its a hot dog.

Lost & Found

Found my sync cord...and can share a couple pictures with you. Here's the pretty yarn I ordered last week. I'm pretty excited about it.

A few months back, my Secret Pal 9 told me about these special Opal yarn colorways that were created based on Friedensreich Hundertwasser paintings. Really intersting color combinations.

Included was the "sideways" sock pattern. Because the artist always wore two different socks, the suggested use is the same. You can see the two socks on the label of the blue/green colorway. I like the idea of two different socks...I can't wait to try it out!

I also received this month's Scout's Indie Swag. Pretty blue yarn and a really cool pattern from Kate Gilbert...the lady who gaves us Clapotis. Okay, ya...that sounded really dirty!

Teal/grey sock update...I need to kitchner the toe and they're done!! Pictures should be in my next post.

Time to hop in the shower and scoot off to work. Have a great day.

Dedicated to Kathy

Well, it's official. Laura's dream has come true...thanks to the world's quickest Catholic ceremony, she's a married lady!

I was basically the unofficial bridesmaid --- I spend the night with her the night before her wedding, was the official dress bussler, and event seamstress when there were a few minor tears to her dress throughout the night.

The weather was so beautiful today -- in the 70's. I spend a little bit of time knitting on my front porch and enjoying the nice breeze. I know that makes me sound like a total old lady...but I don't care. I was able to knock out a couple rows on my sock. Hopefully, I will be able to finish on my train ride to work in the morning.

By the way, this post is dedicated to my pal Kathy. While cocktailing last night, she told me that I haven't really mentioned her on my blog --- whatever. Remember, she's my friend with the webbed feet. Kath was in rare form last night...I can't decide which story I want to share.

Tomorrow is Knit Night with my buddies...I look forward to spending time with them each month. I need to get a good microphone set up so I can record our knit nights and podcast them --- they are beyond hilarious.

I will update this post with pictures, as soon as I find that damn sync cord. I should really find a safe place to keep it!

Funny...but kind of creepy

This is not how I usually describe my friends. But the comments from "Depressed Knitter" were starting to freak me out a little.

At first I thought it was my sister --- then I wasn't sure if I even knew this person...which really started to creepy me out.

Then my silly friend Steve called me to unveil the identity of Depressed Knitter...it was him. Steve is probably the only non-knitting guy I know that knows that "purl" is a word related to knitting. Why? Because it's a frequent answer on crossword puzzles. He's a funny guy.

I have been trying to finish a couple knitting projects --- I have 3 things I'm still working on:

the damn Irish cable bag --- I just need to sew it up and attach the strap...not sure why I haven't done that yet!
The teal/grey sock --- I'm sooo close to working the toe on the second sock. What's the hold up? Not sure...I'd like to check it off my list.
Shawl --- I started a basic shawl with some beautiful yarn I received in a swap. Last night I frogged the entire thing to start again on bigger needles.

I can't even remember the last project I finished --- which is annoying to me. Maybe I will have time to finish all three of these projects over the next week.

Looking forward to my pal Laura's wedding this weekend!

Twice in one day...what am I crazy?

Checked out the latest Vogue Knitting on the way home. I don't remember much because I was so distracted by the stink sitting next to me.

No suprise, the El always smells a little funky. Even more now that the weather is warming up and I don't think the cars have been cleaned EVER.

Nothing is worse than sitting next to an old man with bad breath. Oh wait! There is something worse --- when his friend sitting in the seat intersecting yours and they have a coversation for the ENTIRE ride. Stinky old man breath for 30 minutes.

Sure, I could have gotten up and moved seats...but it seemed like too big of a hassle at the time.

By the way, I'm pretty sure my breathe was better...I'm addicted to the new dark chocolate covered Altoids, I think I ate about 20 of them today.

Marie swears that she is not the "Depressed Knitter." I'm not sure if I believe her. If she's telling the truth, my money might be on Kathy, Laura, or Steve. But why would Steve be reading my knit blog? Enquiring minds what to know...I want to know.

It's been a while --- not much knitting going on in the last couple weeks. I've been doing a little spinning though.

Ordered some kick ass sock yarn...I'm not going to tell you too much about it now. You'll have to wait until I post some pictures of me juggling it. It should arrive this week...so I will have a reason to post again. Two times in one week...I'm not joking here!

Bought the spring/summer issue of Vogue Knitting today --- I'm looking forward to thumbing through it on my train ride home today.

No Title Today

A couple weeks back, I traded my Denise needles for a set of Knit Pick's Options with a gal from my local Stitch 'n Bitch. (I gave the Knit Pick's to my sister).

I hadn't been to the SnB since September I think. Well, last night I decided to hop on over and see what everyone is up to. It's a very diverse group of people. Although I prefer "Knit Night" at my house with my girlfriends...it's cool to have some other people to chat knitting with.

Speaking of chatting about knitting...on my El ride to work this morning (for those not familiar, the "El" is what we call our elevated train/subway system in Chicago) I was working on the second teal/grey sock. A kind of scary looking lady sat next to me half way through my ride and started talking about her crochet projects! Totally not expecting that.

Knitting "to do" List

Well, I'm 95% done with the Irish Cable Bag. This is the project Marie, Brooke, and I decided to do back in November.

(Mine is the one on the right --- Thanks for taking the picture and posting on your blog, Marie. Saved me from hooking up my camera!)

I'm looking forward to finishing my second grey/teal sock this week --- so I can start something else.

I'm not sure what my next project will be --- but I feel like my knitting project wish list is SO long. I have a few skeins of sock yarn...I will try to blow through that before starting the next big project. It's nice to knit small projects...I like the feeling of accomplishment.

Favorite Podcasts this week...I stole this idea from Shannon and thought it was fun!

1 - Lost Podcast with Jay & Jack - If you are obsessed with the TV show Lost...this is a must listen. Great theories and spoilers keep me coming back each week!

2 - The Show with Zefrank - Funny vid-cast from a hilarious New Yorker who travels a lot.

4 - Darkness Radio - What to hear about vampires, ghosts, and creepy hauntings? It's paranormal radio at it's best!

On a total unrelated note: Does anyone else watch The Dresden Files on SciFi? It's pretty bad. I keep watching it each week...hoping it's going to get better.

It takes place in Chicago --- but bizarro Chicago. Nothing looks like Chicago (obviously on a sound stage somewhere in L.A.) --- and none of the streets they mention are real streets. It's so annoying...but I can't stop watching. I hate DVR --- no, I take that back...I love it!

Hi, I'm Stephanie...and I'm addicted to listening to podcasts. **hi Stephanie**

I listen to subjects from knitting to paranormal to cooking to music. Shannon has turned me on to a couple of great shows like Rumor Girls and Chillin' with Anji Bee.

On my el ride home tonight I tuned into my favorite Jewish lesbian, Madge W. Her show is foul and filled with potty humor --- definitely not for children or those who are easily (or even those normally not so easily) offended.

Anyway...today's episode was especially funny to anyone who lives in Chicago. Madge got lost on her car ride back to the city from IKEA in Schaumburg and was so afraid she would end up in Joliet or "Naper-tucky." It made me laugh outloud like a crazy person on the train. At least I didn't smell like pee.

Why is it I'm completely obsessed with American Idol this year? Could it be because Paula Abdul is a total whack-job? Probably. I'm watching it right now...my favorite guy is Blake (No, not Erin's husband...that would be Robert Blake ****) and my favorite girl is Dorothy or Lakisha.

I've been watching way too much TV lately...I blame the damn DVR. At least I found out that I AM smarter than a 5th grader!

So, this past weekend, I broke two of my favorite rosewood dpns. They were a gift from my super-excellent Secret Pal, Sibylle. What a bummer!

I've been in a holding pattern on my teal/grey striped socks because of my broken needles.

Maybe I'm too hard on my needles...it might be better for me to stick to harder wood or metal needles, huh?

Well, I ordered a few things from Knit Picks and they arrived today --- including a hank of "Bare" merino that is ready to soak up some dye. I'm so excited! I can't wait to give it a try. My mom gave me a cool book on natural dying...I want to give it a whirl in the next week or so. If anyone has suggestions on good natural dyes, lay it on me!

I casted on sock #2 this evening and have about an inch done...slowly but surely. I really want to finish this pair ASAP so I can have my Irish Cable Bag finished by St. Patrick's Day.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I prefer to knit with natural fibers...but I'll play with anything that is really pretty.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I use my Knit Picks Options case for needles I use the most. My long straight needles hang out in a crystal vase.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I have been knitting for about 3 years. I'm self taught --- however I have taken classes to learn more techniques. I would consider myself an intermediate knitter --- I'm currently working on the Master Knitters project (it's a goal to finish it this year). Once I pass all three levels, I will consider myself advanced.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Nope.

5. What's your favorite scent?
I like herbal or citrus scents. Nothing too sweet.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I love gummy things --- worms, Swedish Fish, etc --- and, of course, dark chocolate! yummm... Another favorite is Chupa Chup suckers --- delicious!

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
Yes, I'm a new spinner --- it's my latest addiction! Not much time left for many other DIY things.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I like all kinds of music and love hearing new artists. Some favorites are Tom Waits, The Clash, Nina Simone, etc... Music I have a hard time appreciating is rap. I'm also completely addicted to podcasts --- if you have any recommendations of some you like, please share!

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
I love jewel tone colors --- orange, purple, red, gold, etc. Not a big fan of pastel colors.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
Just my husband and my dog-child, Cleo.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Is the Pope Polish? Well, actually he's German...but yes I wear all of those!

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I like a challenge --- but lately, I'm really into small quick projects. I'm trying to blow through my sock yarn.

A pair of socks and a cabled purse.

Hmmm...tough one. It depends on the project. I really like metal or wood. My needle collection is pretty good...but can always use more DPNs.

Oh...nearly 3 years old. It's a black boucle jacket that I don't like to talk about.

Thanks to my Secret Pal from SP9 I have a subscription to Interweave Knits (thanks again Sybille!). I'm pretty set on books and patterns...but always love to get some new yummy yarn or roving!

I really want to start a fair isle project --- something I never thought I would want to do.

The Old Girl is Finally Back

Yes --- my laptop is finally back from the repair shop. It's been too long! There were quite a few internal pieces that were replaced. Don't ask me what they were...I might say a carburetor, because I know nothing about the internal working of a computer, or car for that matter.

Besides my lastest obsession with spinning --- I'm whipping up some dreamy, sparkley purple alpaca --- I'm working to reduce my sock yarn stash. Wouldn't it be nice to have a drawer filled with mostly hand-knit socks? Here's a picture of some crazy soft yarn I'm building a sock with

Spinning...and not at the gym

I had my second spinning lesson today --- and it was great!

Bought some dreamy alpaca roving that I plan on knitting a lacey shawl with.

Hmmm...I think I'm going through a shawl phase.

If you're wondering what's with me and purple...I really don't know. It's almost creepy how I'm drawn to it --- kind of like my sister and brown. I'm certain that it has nothing to do with the Purple Pie Man, because I was never really into Strawberry Shortcake.

Marie bought yarn to make my "purple cardigan" but in a really pretty heathered blue...robin's egg blue. It's going to be really nice...and not brown. Though, it will look nice with brown pants.

Because I hate long posts, I will post a couple short ones today!

Last night, I decided I want to have a pretty, simple shawl --- and so I dug into two gorgeous hanks of hand-dyed silky yarn.

A few months back, I received this yarn from Harriet, who is a great sock knitter, for the Knitter's Coffee Swap.

It is dreamy and so nice to work with. I can't wait to finish it --- it's going to go well with SO many things!

Thanks to everyone for the really nice comments over the last week or so. I've been a terrible blogger...and it's been nice to hear from all of you.

New Fiber Fest in Illinois

I mentioned that I took a spinning lesson on Superbowl Sunday...but I forgot to mention that I found out about a new fiber fest here in Illinois!

This is the first year for the Midwest Fiber and Folk Art Festival in Crystal Lake, IL. It's sponsored by Interweave Press.

I'm pretty excited about checking it out...looks like there will be lots of interesting vendors!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow...

The weather outside IS frightful! There is SO much snow coming down today. Good thing I am working from home today and there is no need to leave the house.

I shoveled the sidewalk in front of my house about an hour ago...there is no evidence because of the snow and wind. I would share some pictures...but I can't find the sync cable for my phone.

Spent the weekend at my parent's house. My mom gave me two Vivian Hoxbro kits she purchased a while back. I've started on the Cables sweater --- I have a feeling it's going to be one of my favorite sweaters! I'm working on the same colorway pictured.

I think the model is Vivian Hoxbro. I like her designs...but HATE her hair color.

Ok...I need to complain for a moment. This has been "one of those weeks." I really wish it were over.

I'm starting to think someone put a voodoo curse on me or something!

Spinning Lesson --- Had a great Lesson at Wool, Warp, and Wheel in Richmond, Illinois. Had to use one of their wheels because mine had a big crack in it. How did that happen? I really don't know. They glued and clamped it for me...and it should be okay...but still!
Freezing Cold --- It's been so cold this week. When Cleo and I headed home from the lakehome early Monday morning, it was -12 with a windchill of -30. Even though she had on her reflective doggie coat, she was so cold she couldn't move. Of course, I picked up my 60 lb pooch and carried her to the car.
Work Stuff --- I've been working really hard on a big project. Pricing came in this week and may put a hault on the whole thing. It costs 6 times more to produce this particular product in the US than it does in China --- and that includes shipping costs! It's back to the drawing board...
Office Stuff --- Pipes froze and broke in our building. Working from home for me this week. Maybe this is a good thing...because I haven't had to jump into the shower first thing in the morning!
Computer Stuff --- Had to take my laptop in for service yesterday. It kept turning itself off --- which doesn't make for a productive day. It's still under warranty from the manufacturer. So, I'll be chained to my desktop computer at home until I get the old laptop back.
Dog Stuff --- Woke up this morning to find my dog's face super puffy with eye slits...like she was in a boxing match. Saw this before when she was stung by a bee...but there are no bees around this time of year. Had to take her to the vet this morning. They didn't know what happened...gave her a couple injections and 2 hours later, it's less puffy.
Oh Yeah ---- And The Bears lost the Super Bowl. Just kidding about that one. I'm not much of a football fan.

A couple of positive things...

I FINISHED THE PURPLE CARDIGAN!!!!! I'm going to block it at my parent's house this weekend --- mom has the nicest drying rack integrated into her dryer. I will post pictures after it's blocked. It's a warm one...perfect for this cold, cold weather in Chicago.
I'm a spinner now! I have plied a few skiens of yarn....pictures will be posted soon.
This week the radiators in my house were bleed --- it's much warmer around here now!

I'm a pretty positive person and normally not much of a complainer. It felt better to get all this off my chest.

Wow --- I can't believe how fast last week flew by.

Not much time spent knitting --- I still have that damn purple cardigan sleeve to finish. I wish I would hurry-up and finish it already. There are so many other things I want to knit --- but I'm forcing myself to finish this first!

I organized my "home office" this weekend --- and came across a baby cardigan that is about 95% completed. The baby that this was intended for is much too big for this cute number. Good thing I know so many ladies who are preggers.

Congratulations to my pal, Erin --- this past Friday she became a mama! Baby Jack is so lucky!!

Busy Weekend!

Well, it was a busy weekend.

Kevin and I went up to the lake home on Friday night. I'm happy to report that no critters moved in since our last visit! Cleo ran around like a maniac and had fun slippin' around on the ice.

Saturday we hit a couple outlet stores in Wisconsin --- good to know they opened a Restoration Hardware Outlet near the Calvin Klein and Addias shops! I finally got a pair of winter boots --- yeah it's nearly the end of January, but we haven't had much winter weather yet. I'm sure it will be no suprise to those that know me, but I also bought a new pair of black Converse low tops.

On our way back to the lake we stopped at the famous Brat Stop. On all my trips to Wisconsin, I can't believe I've never Brat Stopped before. The brat platter was all I could have asked for...yummy Wisconsin sausage love! If you ever find yourself "behind the cheddar curtain" you must stop and check out this place...the people watching is amazing!

Sunday was a big day for Chicago football fans...ya, The Bears are going to the Superbowl --- without a shuffle this time.

We had the game on but it was a busy day starting to rehab the lake house. Kevin and his brother demo-ed the bathroom. Kevin's sister-in-law and I worked on removing wallpaper from this small stairwell --- which is NOT fun at all. Cleo was busy playing with her cousin, Baxter, and trying to dig in the garbage --- the usual.

The evening ended with yummy food at a local Polish restaurant --- pickle soup = delicious! And then some more cocktails back at the house (which is why I was a little "crusty" today.) We all spent the night --- I woke up at 5am to drive back to the city. It's only an hour drive, but I wanted to beat rush hour. I still can't believe that people actually do that commute on a daily basis. That would be my personal hell.

I also worked a bit on the second sleeve of my purple cardigan --- will this thing ever be done?! I'm so bored with this project and anxious to start something new. Knitting sweaters on small needles SUCKS. Even though it's a total pain, the end result is always nice. Once it's completed, I will forget what a pain in the ass it was to work on.

Lion's Brand Gets a Face Lift

Did they hire a new marketing team...because I almost fell over when I saw the spring/summer 2007 catalog in the mail today.

There are some really cool patterns...and the photography is really nice...Cool perspectives and beautiful new colors.

Ok...before you rush over to their website...be warned, it is still really lame and outdated. I'm sure this will change with time.

A cool feature on their site is the Charity Connection. This is a great tool to connect with charities that you're interested or even ones in your hometown!

Cleo's New Jacket

Last night we had dinner at my brother-in-law's house. It was super fun and my dog, Cleo, received a belated Christmas gift from her "cousin" Baxter.

Here's a picture of Cleo modeling her new coat...or maybe it's really a vest. Either way it's hilarious.

Baxter's mom intended this for him...but he's a 90 lb. Chocolate Lab...and so he really needed a xtra-large.

It's hard to tell in the picture but the main color is reflective silver --- PLUS there is a zippered pocket along the back...not sure what it's for!

Tonight I'm hosting book club...so I guess I better rustle up some munchies for my friends. We will be discussing The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candace Millard. I really enjoyed it...looking forward to hearing what everyone else thought.

I also hope to get a little knitting done during the discussion...I'm not obsessed with finishing that purple cardigan or anything!

I need some help.

I'm getting close to finishing this f-ing purple cardigan. One more sleeve and it's time for sewing! Can you feel excitement in the air?

Before I can swear this thing, I'm going to need some buttons.

As you can tell from this picture...the buttons are really small - 1/4".

I'd love to get some sparkley buttons --- does anyone know if they're made that small?

Can you really have too many needles?

While I love working on metal needles for any project. My favorite needles are the set of rosewood dpns I received from my Secret Pal. They're so nice to knit with and probably the "hardest working needles" in my collection...there is always a sock on them!

Another Purple Sweater Update

Ok...I am determined to finish this cardigan. I think part of my problem was the needles (or at least they're taking the blame right now).

I knit about 60% of this project on size 6 needles from my Denise Interchangable set. I have discovered that nothing is worse than knitting wool on plastic needles. I hate it!

Recently, I became the proud owner of a set of Knit Picks Options needles. They are fanstastic! If you are a fan of Addi Turbo needles, this are a must have for you.

There are only a couple things I don't like:
- There is no indication of the needle size imprinted on the needles --- it's necessary to have a needle gauge handy.
- If I don't tightly screw on the needles, they become loose during knitting.

I can deal with this because these needles are FAST! I zipped through the second half of the front left panel and am on to my first sleeve.

No promises as to when this project will be completed.

Marie and Brooke have started the Irish Cables Bag without me...I have to finish this damn sweater first!!

Knit Night Recap

A few of my girlfriend's came by for our monthly knit night. I think our non-knitting friends don't believe that we actually knit...but, of course we do!

Erin & Kathy are both knitting the same baby poncho pattern --- Brooke played the role of Teacher's Aid and helped interprete the pattern for my star students!

Laura frogged the scarf she crocheted last time...and Marie was home sick.

Special guests this week were my friend's daughters (14 & 8) who I recently taught to knit. They were so cute and excited to hang out with us.

Happy Birthday Dad...and Elvis

No, I am not Elvis' illegitimate daughter! My dad and Elvis share the same birthday --- only Dad's 11 years younger.

More Elvis connections to my family (kind of...okay, not really)...

My sister was born the day before Elvis died on his toliet at Graceland. Wouldn't it make sense (okay, maybe not) that in 1995 my family roadtrip to Memphis for "Elvis Week?" It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen --- talk about good people watching!

I don't think is this news to anyone...die-hard Elvis fans are freaks.

Everyone has their "favorite Elvis." Mine is the fat-rhinestoned-karate chopping-Vegas Elvis. It's hard to believe he was only 42 when he died --- look what heavy drug abuse will do, kids!

Knitting Resolutions for 2007

Holy Shit --- 2007 is here! I can't believe how short 2006 was...time flies when you're having fun, right?

Before I list my resolutions, I must tell you, that this is not something I normally do at the start of a year.

Here goes...

Reduce stash and only purchase yarn for specific projects Yes, this means I cannot purchase yarn because I might make something out of it someday. That might work for other people...me, I just end up with a lot of random skeins.
Inspired by Knitting for Peace (a great Christmas gift from Brooke), I will participate in 4 charity knitting organizations. I would like at least one to benefit people in the Chicagoland area --- time to do some research!
Complete Level I & II of the TKGA's Master Knitter Program I have been draggin my feet on blocking my Level I swatches and finishing the hat portion. I need to suck it up and submit it so I can give myself plenty of time for Level II.

These are all do-able. In one year, I hope to look back at this post and with a check mark next to each goal!

Here it is...the last project off the needles in 2006...a pair of Jaywalkers. I now understand why this is such a popular pattern for sock knitters...not only is it a fun pattern, but the socks feel WONDERFUL on my feets!

My fingers were working overtime to finish this project before 2007. Officially, this is the 25th project completed in 2006.

I didn't knit very much for the first few months of 2006...things were busy and I was easily distracted.

With all the wonderful new knitting books I received for my birthday and Christmas...I have no doubt 2007 will be filled with lots of knitting challenges!

Holiday Spinning & Knitting

Wow..The last week has flown by.

I had a great Christmas. We celebrated on the 24th with my husbands family --- it was fun to play and be silly with his niece and nephew. Christmas Day we "vegged out" at my parents house --- it was perfect!

What a lucky gal I am --- I got a spinning wheel from my husband! Let me tell you...It is SO fun! He drove out to Marengo, IL to purchase it from my favorite knit shop The Fold (for you sock knitters...this is one of the few places that sell Socks That Rock yarn).

So...I am the new, proud owner of a Louet S-10 DT wheel! You may remember, that a few months back I took a spinning lesson --- but it was on a hand spindle. It took me a little while to figure out how to work the wheel - too long for a piece of simple technology ha!

I love the clean-lined design of it --- I think it's beautiful. Here's a picture with the skein winder on top --- along with the bag of Corriedale roving.

I have spun a bit over the last few days --- but I feel guity because I still need to finish that damn purple sweater.

What kind of progress have I made on the purple sweater, you ask? 0% Ha!

I got distracted by some Trekking yarn...before I knew it, I had my first Jaywalker sock. I'll post another picture when I finish sock #2 and block the pair --- I'll also try to keep Cleo's snout out of the picture!

The colors are amazing --- now I know why everyone likes knitting this pattern!

Pink Bobble Hat

I'm pleased to say this hat used up 2 skeins (Karabella Aurora 8) from my stash!

This pattern was inspired by my birthday present from Grandma A - Knitting on the Edge.

I've been wearing this hat a lot. It's really soft and I think the colors are great.

A few months back, I bought quite a few skeins of Karabella from my LYS. It was 60% off and I couldn't pass it up. I planned to make some silly baby booties.

The baby booties still might happen --- I have a few buddies due over the next couple months...

But I've been getting so many compliments on this hat, that I might do some hat experiements with the remaining 6 skeins!

My husband gave me a fantastic journal with a goofy illustration of a shark on it. I'm using it to keep record of patterns I create. Is there anything more frustrating than making a cool design and then forgetting how you did it?

Wow -- it's been a while since my last post --- and boy have things been busy with work and getting ready for Christmas. Here are some updates and new things in my world...

Purple Sweater: Last Wednesday, I accidently left it in my friend's car. I got it back today and plan to get cracking on it later this week. Since I have been without this project, I worked to reduce "the stash." So far, 2 skeins down --- a cute pink hat. I'll try to post pictures tomorrow.

Olivia's Birthday Present: Last week was my pal, Olivia's birthday. A couple months back, she commented on my Fetching fingerless gloves and hinted how she'd love a pair.

This pair of Fetching and scarf are made with soft & yummy alpaca --- my wintertime favorite!

Tea for Two --- or Twenty! Yesterday, I was so suprised to receive an amazing box of goodies from one of my clients. She is a true tea-lover and shared some of her favorites in this generous "thank you" gift.

It is all so wonderful --- My favorite is the mug that not only has a strainer but it's own lid for steeping! I've been enjoying trying all the new flavors and nibbling on the treats!

This project seems to be never ending. Maybe it's because I haven't knitting a garment on small needles in quite a while.

The purple cardigan creation is developing with the help of size US 6 needles with a Cascade yarn.

It's a very dense fabric and I can't wait to wrap my body up in it --- it's sooo cold here!

I really want to finish this by the end of the year --- and since I've vowed to knit only this and helmet liners until 2007, it just might happen.

I've been trying to think of something that I can put in my pictures for scale --- any suggestions?

Knitters Swap with Caffeine

Swap exchanges are SO fun! (Thanks Deborah for getting me hooked!)

I received a package from my Knitters' Coffee Swap partner, Harriet. Holy cow, did I get score some excellent loot!

I have 4 different kinds of organic coffees and a special hot chocolate to sample --- how cool!

In addition, my buddy sent a set of amazing beaded stitch markers, a "lamb" yarn cutter, a pattern for a lace shawl (the pattern looks more difficult that it actually is - my favorite!), and two skeins of gorgeous hand-painted Mystical Creation Yarn in beautiful jewel-tone colors (another favorite)!

As if that wasn't enough, Harriet, sent some delicious pumpkin cookies that she made with her grandma --- YUM!

Thanks again for the great package, Harriet! I can't wait to see how you like the goodies I sent you!

Purple Cardigan Update

I have been working hard to make a dent on my purple cardigan before the yarn arrives for the helmet liners I've promised to make.

Here are a couple pictures of my progress. The pattern stitch is called "modified lattice stitch."

Overall, this project seems to be moving along s-l-o-w. This picture is the status of the back. To give you an idea of scale, that's a shiny quarter in the lower right.

It's so strange how different the colors look in each picture. The true color is a blend of these two images.

New Podcast & Red Scarves

I just discovered a new knitting podcast called Unwound. I like the format --- people are encouraged to participate in the show by leaving voicemail messages or email audio messages to be included in future shows. Pretty cool.

One of the topics of the second show is the Orphan Foundation of America's Red Scarf Project.

This is the second year the Orphan Foundation of America will assemble and ship special care packages to foster youth at colleges, universities and trade schools across the nation. Last year 7,500 packages were sent to foster youth in all 50 states. This is one program that helps recognize the promise and potential of young people who age out of foster care while providing support and encouragement during the academic year.

I will be donating the red scarf I completed earlier this week --- plus I have a few more skeins of red in my stash. The organization is also accepting things besides handknits...things like gift cards, stamps, etc.

I know how excited I get when I receive a package in the mail --- and it's usually something I've ordered for myself. I hope one of my scarves may brighten someone elses day.

Package from My Secret Pal

Seriously, I know everyone thinks their Secret Pal is the best --- but my buddy really is the greatest!

What's here?! First of all some beautiful rosewood dpns and the perfect colorway of sock yarn to match the purple cardigan I'm working on.

A chocolate/hazelnut candy bar, some gummi bears (they are made in the German town where my pal lives) and my favorite lollipop...Chupa-Chup!

As if that wasn't enough, I received some special olive oil bath beads and a citrus body wash!

Besides the wonderful gifts she mailed, my secret pal has become a friend. We not only exchange emails, but we "chat" via Instant Messenger.

Red, Red Scarf

I dove into my stash and decided to use up some left-over yarn and make a quick scarf.

Not having enough to make the full-sized Clapotis --- I reworked the pattern as a thinner scarf.

Another great scarf for knockin' around in a denim jacket.

When this unseasonably warm weather passes, I'll have the opportunity to wear it.

It's been in the upper 50's/low 60's the last few days --- Indian Summer in November!

Helmet Liners and Yarn Diets

I'm so happy --- I have finished the "blue socks!" Finally, Blogger will let me attach photos!

This pattern was inspired by Knitty's fingerless glove pattern, Fetching --- using cables instead of ribbing at the top of the sock.

Now I am patiently waiting for the black yarn ordered for helmet liners. Until it arrives, I am working on my purple cardigan. This cardigan is the opposite of a quick knit. I really hope I like the finished garment.

I'm also going to try to reduce my stash --- Yarn Diet! No more yarn purchases until February --- I think I can do it!

Of course, Scout's S.W.A.G. Club and swaps don't count --- I am currently participating in Secret Pal 9 and Knitters Coffee Swap.

I know this may not be a popular view --- but I NEED to get this off my chest.

Those participating in Secret Pal 9 received an email from Kerry on Thursday November 23 retracting the Helmet Liner Charity Knitting Challenge.

Helmet Liners are used by our troops to keep warm during sub-zero winter temperatures in places like Afganistan, Iraq, Kosovo, and Korea.

Apparently, some of the nearly 550 SP9 participates were upset & offended with this challenge and so the rules were changed. My response to these people is..."If you don't like it, don't participate in the challenge!"

I know some people are not supportive of US military involvement in the Middle East but I cannot understand how Americans can be against supporting our troops --- the ones volunteering their lives for our country.

Yes, it's true, many particpating in SP9 live outside the United States --- but the rules indicate that the SP program is based in the US and welcomes participants in other countries.

It's sad to see yet another example of how out-of-whack society is --- so many are caught up in "polictical correctness" and worry about offending people. Get over it --- speak your mind and support your opinions.

What am I going to do?
I am working to finish my second blue sock (close to toe-completion). Once this is completed, I will put my Christmas knitting on hold and whip out a few helmet liners for the troops.

Blogger is being dumb and I cannot upload the Navy or Coast Guard flags. I will try to get them up later.

Excellent Weekend

So, my birthday is on Tuesday but I celebrated at my parent's home today. We were joined by my sister, Marie, and her husband, my Grandma A, and Brooke --- my "unwanted little sister".

Note: Brooke is a very dear friend of mine and Marie. She's "the little sister we never wanted." That's where she came up with the name of her blog.

Marie & Tim gave me Mason Dixon Knitting --- which I've had my eye on for a loooong time. The photography is great and I can't wait to find the time to read through the whole thing. She also gave me a new pair of black Dansko's.

Funny thing about the shoes...Marie bought them for herself, but couldn't get her foot in the size 39 (our normal size). I told her not to return them, because I wanted a new pair (they are THE most comfortable shoes in the world). When I tryed them on today, I couldn't get my foot into them either! Why?! Because of the super thick insert they put in them. Once we took them out, they fit like a glove...and Marie got the new pair!

Brooke suprised me with a knitting book I'd never seen --- Folk Bags. Her timing was perfect. On Saturday night, I came across a bag I knit (and mom felted) last year. I thought to myself, why don't I knit more bags? Now I have this amazing book for inspiration!

Marie, Brooke, and I are doing our own knit along of the Irish Cable Bag. We spent quite a bit of time selecting our colors after dinner. It's going to be real fun...I can't wait to get started! Marie ordered the yarn and so it will be shipped to her house. This means I can't start on the pattern until she "lets" me. Ha-ha! If anyone wants to join us...let me know!

Early Birthday Gift!!!

Today I finished some stuff around my house and headed over to my parents place. It was a great day.

My dad and I went to see an early show of Casino Royale the new James Bond flick. I really liked it --- definetly worth checking out at the show.

Most importantly, I want to brag that I have the BEST grandma EVER! She gave me my birthday present early Yes, failure to keep secrets runs in the family --- we can't help it...we get so excited.

"Grandma A" gave me two books that I've been dreaming about. How did she know?!

I can't wait to finish the sock and sweater projects so I can try out some of these techniques!!

Knitting & Friends with Webbed Toes

It's been a busy week --- I can't believe it's Thursday night already!

This past Monday, I had my girlfriends over for Knit Club. I'm so proud of Kathy & Erin...they're starting on a new project --- a baby poncho!

My pal Kathy was a little sad when her baby was born without webbed toes. Yes, this may sound a little unusual, but Kathy has webbed toes and she thinks the rest of us are weird. So, I had to make this pair of booties for Kathy's daughter...hilarious! I can't wait to see a picture of Kaitlyn wearing them!

I'm a Swapper

On a regular basis I visit Deborah's blog. It seems she is always participating in a swap and exchanging wonderful goodies! Deborah told me about www.swap-bot.com and now I've been bitten by the swap bug. (Hey sick-o's: I do not mean "swap" in a dirty way --- only in terms of my knitting addiction!)

My "Knit Kit" swap partner sent me 2 skeins of beautiful cranberry colored wool and 2 skeins of a spicy brown mustard colored wool (hmmm..can you tell I'm hungry right now?!) A new set of bamboo needles and cable needled accompanied two scarf patterns --- Irish Hiking Scarf and Besotted Scarf. I'm looking forward to knitting these up --- believe it or not, I actually don't have many hand-knitted scarves!

This is an especially fun time to receive presents in the mail because my birthday is next week --- so it's like starting the celebration early!

Some Random Updates...

I'm happy to report, the baby booties were a big hit at baby shower! The party was really nice and Erin was "showered" with so many beautiful things for the new babe. Will it be a boy or a girl --- I think it's going to be a girl.

While I enjoy going to my local Stitch 'n Bitch, I would rather spend that time knitting with my friends --- there is always something funny to talk about. I'm pretty excited that a few ladies from the shower may be joining our monthly "Knit Club." The more the merrier!

What's on my needles...
The first blue sock is nearly completed. The unique thing about these socks is...I made up the pattern. Well, actually, I was inspired by other patterns like the Fetching fingerless gloves I made over the summer. I was curious to see what would happen when I replaced ribbing with cables. So far, I really like the result.

Doesn't that picture look funny --- a perfect right angle! How did I do that?!

I've started the Royal Cardigan project. I'm really enjoying this --- the "motified lattice" pattern is easy --- but not as boring as stockinette stitch. I really like purple (camera flash washed out the color)...and can't wait to add this to my winter wardrobe.

Bootie Call

Knitters Coffee Swap

Whole Bean or Ground? Even though I have a coffee grinder, I prefer to buy my coffee ground. That grinder is a real pain in the ass and I don't have a fancy coffee maker that grinds the beans before I brew.

Fully Loaded or Decaf? What kind of question is this? Totally caffeinated, of course! I'm the person that can drink coffee and then go to bed. It has to be something in my genes...My parents drink coffee all day long...Even on hot summer days!

Regular or Flavored? Regular --- not really a fan of flavored coffees. Although, I love the chicory coffee from Cafe DuMonde. Does that count as flavored?

How Do You Drink Your Coffee? 98% of the time I drink my coffee black. Occasionally, I treat myself to a Dunkin Donuts coffee with cream and sugar --- it's heavenly!

Favorite Coffee Ever? I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks, but right now my favorite coffee drink is a Cafe Americano from Starbucks.

Are you fussy about your coffee or will any old bean do? I am not crazy fussy about my coffee. I mean how great is percolated coffee made over the fire when your camping? Even if you do get some grounds in your cup?!

Favorite treats to have with your coffee? Something sweet is always nice --- a yummy cookie or muffin.

Yarn/fiber you love? I really like working with natural fibers --- wool, alpaca, silk, etc.

Yarn/fiber you hate? Even though they have their place/purpose, I really don't enjoy working with acrylic.

What's on your needles? I'm working on a pair of blue socks, a purple cardigan, and some baby items for gifts.

Favorite colors? Jewel tones...Reds, purples, oranges...

Allergies? Nope!

Secret Knitting --- It's so hard!

Ok, it's true, I can't keep a secret --- especially when it comes to presents!

I've been working hard on some knitted gifts --- and I can't wait to give them away this weekend.

Of course, I cannot post any pictures of my latest finished objects --- some friends visit my blog (and can't believe "strangers" reply in the comments). I promise to share photos after Saturday afternoon.

Can you tell I'm excited to give these gifts away? I mean, come on, I didn't have to post a blog about it until Saturday. I'm just excited!!

Because Old Dogs Get Cold

You may think it's funny...but my dog, Cleo, gets cold.

Today with temperatures right around freeezing, she was happy to jump into this completely ridiculous sweatshirt. I think she would have liked it even better if I covered her up with a blanket!

It's so cold and I can't believe there is a chance my kickball team will be playing tonight --- yes, it's outdoors!

Time to get out the leg-warmers and wool socks!

New Picture --- no more doll hair

So, I've changed the picture that hangs above "About Me." Why you ask? Well, according to my sources (mom & Marie) my hair in the photo looked "like doll hair."

A special thanks to my Secret Pal who helped me with sizing the new picture --- you're the best!
Not sure if this new picture makes me look thinner or chubbier --- but I've actually lost 5 lbs! Hooray for me :) Part of it may be because of the cleanse I'm doing right now.

Anyway, hope the new photo gets Mom's Seal of Approval --- and hey, let me know if my hair looks like crap! :)

Sock Blues

So, I finish one a pair of socks and dive into another --- because that's what you're supposed to do, right?

I have been thinking about creating my own pattern since I started those purple socks. Instead of ribbing at the top, I have incorporated a few cables --- we'll see how it turns out.

This is a great mindless project and I think it will turn out nice.

So far, I like working with the Trekking --- it move really fast on my metal dpns.

Purple Nurple

Well, it didn't hurt as much as a Purple Nurple --- but this pattern was a total pain in the ass. I'm so happy I've finally finished the second sock!

Seriously, what was I thinking choosing such a complicated pattern for my first sock?!

Sure, there are a few mistakes in the lace pattern, but hey, they're going to be on my feet, right?

I love the color and yarn...I'm thinking of starting a blanket with left over sock yarn.

No, I didn't finish my Master's project by my (self imposed) deadline of Oct 31. It's going to have to wait until January --- I have a few gift projects I need to get out of the way first.

Loot from Scout's Indie Swag Club

Here are the goodies I received from the first month of Scout's Indie Swag Club. I love the black & white theme of this month's loot.

I can't wait to dig into this sock yarn. I think I'm going to try a pair of toe-up socks. The project bag is really nicely lined --- perfect for toting around a small project!

Of course, I still need to finish my Level 1 Project and those damn purple sock before I can begin a new project. It's so easy to be distracted.

Ballbands & Buffalo

Well, my garage sale this weekend had a low turn out. It would have been better if I had the idea in August or September. This October has been rainy and cold.

I worked on a ballband washcloth with some leftover Shine from KnitPicks. It's really soft and feel nice on your skin. I really like the bright and cheerful colors.

I did get a chance to visit a new yarn/spinning shop --- Wool, Warp, and Wheel in downtown Richmond, IL --- which is a cute little town in the country with lots of antique stores.

Why visit this little shop? They're the only retailer in Illinois that sells Buffalo Gold yarn and roving --by the way, don't you think they could have come up with a better name for their brand? Is it just me...Buffalo "Gold" sound like something buffalo leave behind in the pasture?

This stuff is EXPENSIVE! It's $60 for a skein of laceweight (250 yds/50gms). Apparently, it does not felt and gets softer with each washing. It's not in my budget --- but the store has a holiday registry. I filled out a form and listed a couple items I'd like to receive for Christmas/my birthday. The store sends a card to anyone I want letting them know what I would like to receive! It sounds a little goofy --- but how nice to receive something you REALLY want from a non-knitter. (Mom, you might receive one of these cards)

My LOST Knit Night

It was another cold and rainy day here in Chicago. I hate this inbetween rainy weather. Thank God for wool socks --- thanks Mom!

Of course, I'm so excited to see this season's third episode of LOST. This week will focus on Locke --- will we learn why he was in the wheelchair? I think so! It's been making me crazy --- what's going on with Locke and Mr. Eko?

I will also be working on my Master's project --- my goal is to complete swatch 7, 8, and 9 --- they're all about decreasing. Borrrring --- snooze!

All the while, I will be sipping on my new favorite soda --- Diet Rite White Grape! It's Super-Delish!

I listen to many podcasts --- a few focused on knitting. I was happy to see, after a long break, Lime & Violet and Pixie Purls are back with a new episode. I'm patiently waiting for Brenda Dayne to return from break.

Update on Masters Project

Well, after being distracted with a couple pairs of socks and some washclothes, I'm back working on my Level I swatches --- completed are 6 of the 15. I am about 80% done with the report on the Blocking and Care of Knits.

I am still working toward my personal goal of completing it by the end of the month. Besides the remaining swatches, I have 17 questions to answer and a simple hat.

My goal is to complete this before starting any additional projects. I'm having a garage sale this weekend --- so I'll probably start another sock or washcloth or another small and quick project.

Here are a couple of pictures of my first fully completed pair of socks. (I needed to take a break from the lace pattern of my purple socks).

The pictures are kind of washed out. My digital camera has crapped out on me --- these were taken with my cell phone.

The pattern is Whitby from Nancy Bush's Knitting on the Road. I used size 4 dpns with Socks that Rock colorway Spot Rock One.

This yarn was very nice, but should really be used on a simliar pattern. The cables get lost with all the colors.

I have one more skein of Socks that Rock in Yosemite - I'm thinking Jaywalkers. If anyone has a pattern recommendation --- let me know!

I'm having a blast so far with SP9. I have the best secret pal! She and I have been using instant messages to "chat." I think this secret-keeping business is going to make me crazy. I really want to know who she is and where she's at --- I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in Europe, so cool!

I have put together the first package for my pal --- I hope she likes the stuff. I think I will send her three packages. Is that typical...I'm not sure.

My Loyal Pal, Cleo

Even though I haven't mentioned her yet, I am crazy about my pooch, Cleo.

I rescued her from the pound in August of 1999. I was told she was just under a year old --- so that makes her about 8 years old now.

It depresses me to think of her being old. My husband reminds me that she is the right size dog to live for another 8 years.

To me, Cleo is the best. Other people wouldn't think so --- she has lots of bad habits, but I choose to ignore them.

She follows me from room to room and lays next to me while I knit --- and although she's doesn't shed a lot, I know there's a little piece of her in each item I make. (don't you just want a hand knit item from me now!)

So, last week was the premiere of season three. I thought it was a great show --- so interesting to learn more about The Others.

A couple of things that I have been thinking about this week ---

Why did we only see bandages on Jack and Kate? Did they inject or extract from Sawyer too?
What happened to Kate after breakfast with "Benry"? How much time passed between breakfast and being caged by Sawyer? She seemed awfully hungry. One of The Others commented to Sawyer that it only took the bears 2 hours to figure out the sequence --- so he must have been at it longer.
Who is the boy in the other cage (aka Chachi)? Could Chachi be the person that landed in the hot air balloon? The body buried below is his travel companion.
Why did Sawyer so easily trust Chachi when he was set free from the cage?
I don't think Juliet doesn't actually have a stack of information about Jack's history. She, obviously, cannot be trusted. When Jack was passed out, could they have injected a true serum and asked him basic questions --- what do you do for a living? are you married? where do you live? why were you travelling? etc. All that paper could have been unrelated to Jack --- but because his head isn't clear, he didn't question it.

I know I'm a huge nerd when it comes to this show --- I don't care.

Knit Club - Round Two

Tonight was the official second meeting of Knit Club. And it was another success!

Erin & Kathy are working on baby hats --- it's their first venture to knitting in the round on dpns and they're doing fantastic!

Marie is using up some Noro for a pretty scarf and Brooke is still working on her Lace Leaf sweater. I think Brooke is about to finish her very first project! We're all so proud of her.

I frogged my sock from Knitting on the Road (it was too small) and bumped the needle size to 4. I'm about 5" into it and can tell it's going to be perfect.

As requested, here's a link to the Mexican Lasagna recipe from tonight's menu. I know it kind of sounds disgusting --- but it's like an enchiladas casserole --- delish! I substituted the chicken for a soy-substitute with the texture of ground beef (Erin, I will dig up the name for you).

My First Sock

News alert...I have completed my very first sock!!!

It fits so well...I cannot wait to have one for both feet.

This lacey pattern is probably the most difficult pattern I have ever attempted. It's not that it is difficult but reading the charts requires you to know exactly where you're at.

I have casted on the second sock and have about 2" completed.

While I work this second sock, I also casted on a new pair with yarn from my Socks that Rock stash. The new pattern is Whitby from Knitting on the Road --- it has a couple cables and is very easy to memorize. I started sock one last night and turned the heel --- it knits fast!

Got my digital camera back --- tried to snap a picture of progress on my new sock --- but the battery died! I'll post pictures when I find some batteries :)

Operation Clean Sweep

I woke up too early for a Saturday -- 6am. I decided to do some fall cleaning --- focusing primarily on my closets.

After a few hours, I loaded several bags into my car and delivered them to my local Salvation Army. (If I don't get those bags out of my house asap, they can sometimes lay around for a few weeks...or months). It feels good to have my closets organized again.

The fall cleaning bug then transferred over to my yarn stash. I used some extra plastic boxes from my closet to house yarn.

This was WAY better than my previous system (or lack of one), keeping yarn in clear plastic bags --- which ended up in various places throughout my house.

During Operation Clean Sweep I came across a baby blanket I started crocheting about 3 years ago. It's about 30% complete. I remember it being really boring --- probably why I blocked it from my mind and hid it the back of my closet.

Maybe I'll get bored and finish it...or something. I can't imagine frogging it and using the squeaky acrylic for anything else.

Knit update: I finished the first sock in the color of concord grape jelly. I immediately casted-on for the second sock. It's starting to get chilly here in Chicago and I can't wait to wear these socks!

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I love knitting with natural fibers and natural fiber blends--- loved working with cashmerino! Even though it has it's place, I really don't enjoy working with acrylic --- too squeeky! But, I'll try anything once!

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I keep straight needles in a pretty crystal vase, circulars wound up in a metal tin w/ my crochet hooks, dpns in a roll-up fabric case, and my colored Denise needles in their fugly case.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I have been knitting for a couple years --- and have become completely addicted to it. I am currently working on Level I of TKGA's master knitter program. I feel confident that I am between intermediate and advanced. (I won't call myself advanced until I pass Level II!)

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Nope!

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products, etc.)
I love things that smell clean --- nothing too sweet or overly flowerly. I can't stop burning this new candle that is lemongrass & grapefruit scented --- It's amazing. I am a HUGE fan of soaking in the tub --- especially when the weather turns cool here in Chicago.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Oh - for sure! Swedish fish, licorice (black and red), dark chocolate,

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I recently learned how to use a handle spindle. I'm going to take a second lesson and learn the basics of the spinning wheel. As of right now, I think I'm more of a knitter than a spinner. Before I started knitting, I taught myself to crochet --- then I came to my senses and realized that two sticks are way more fun than one! I love to garden in the summer and have been begging my husband to build a darkroom in the basement so I can satisfy my inner-photographer.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I know everyone says this, but I really like all kinds of music --- even a few rap songs! Some of my favorite artists include Tom Waits, Nina Simone, The Kinks, David Bowie, Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, The Gorillas, ...I love learning about new up & coming bands too.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
For the last 20 years, the majority of my wardrobe has consisted of black. But that's not a fun color to knit with. Since I began knitting, I've been completely in love with the color orange. I really like jewel tones...deep, saturated hues of red, purple, gold, emerald green...

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
It's just me, my husband, and my silly mutt, Cleo.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Have you ever visited Chicago in the winter?! Of course I wear scarves, hats, mittens, gloves, wool socks, heavy sweaters --- it's all about layering! I have to admit, not a fan of the poncho --- I made one a few years ago and wore it once. I've been thinking about frogging it and recycling the yarn for something I would use.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Last year I was addicted to knitting fingerless gloves. My hands get cold in the winter and they are great to wear while working on the computer. It looks like socks are going to get me through this winter!

13. What are you knitting right now?
I started my very first pair of socks --- I'm almost done with the first one. I started stashing sock yarn and can't wait to dive into some new patterns. I am also working on my Masters swatches --- personal goal to submit my finished binder by the end of October.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
I love to receive handmade gifts! It's such a nice feeling to receive a one-of-kind gift that someone you know created. Everytime you wear/use it --- hopefully, you think of them!

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Wow --- tough question. I like straight and circular...and prefer bamboo, alumium/Addi's to plastic. I really like the Knit Picks dpns too! They're really nice and pointy.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Nope - it's on my Christmas list this year --- for sure!

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
This damn Lace Leaf Sweater. It's all knitted --- I basically need to sew the arms to the body and voila! a completed project. I started this project in June or July I think. I really tend to finish one project before starting another --- I think this is the longest something has sat untouched.

18. What is your favorite holiday?
I was born the day before Thanksgiving --- it's always been my favorite. My best-buddy refers to Thanksgiving as "Christmas without the stress of gift-giving." I like that.

19. Is there anything that you collect?
Yarn --- duh! Actually, besides yarn, I'm not really a collector.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I don't have any magazine subscriptions --- but purchase Interweave as soon as it hits my LYS. I really like the designs in Loop-d-Loop --- but haven't had time to find a used copy online. I'm also saving to get the Options Needles from Knit Picks --- I've heard nothing but good things.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I am really curious about "the magic loop" and knitting two socks at the same time. Backwards knitting looks cool too. Heck, I really want to learn any techinque I don't know right now.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes, I'm going to consider myself a sock knitter (even though I haven't finished my first pair yet). I wear a ladies US size 9 shoe - foot length = 9.75" [25cm] Not sure what other measurements you might need.

LOST - Season Three

SEASON PREMIERE - "A Tale of Two Cities"
In the season premiere episode, Jack, Kate and Sawyer begin to discover what they are up against as prisoners of "The Others."

There are so many questions left from season two --- I can't wait to get some answers!

Found the Pattern...I feel dumb!

Well, it seems I packed up the pattern with some books I was using for my Master Knitting Level I paper.

It was making me crazy --- I consider myself a pretty organized person and usually know where I put things.

With all those years of Catholic schooling, you would think I would remember which Saint would help me out if I sent a prayer...Ha-ha!

Here's a picture of my progress of my very first sock. The 90 degree heel looks hilarious to me - but, so far, it fits pretty well. I have another inch or two before attacking the toe.

I lost the pattern!!

I am totally freaking out.

I can't find the pattern for my Autumn Leaves Lace Socks. I have ripped through everything (yes, including the garbage) looking for it.

This is SO frustrating. I really wanted to make a dent in these socks this weekend.

By the way this photo doesn't show the color well --- it's totally concord grape jelly!
